About Us

The Maison des Familles de Saint-Laurent, located in Montreal, was founded in 2009 thanks to a strong community mobilization and effective coordination between stakeholders. The borough, the healthcare and social services centre (CSSS), and community organizations worked together to develop a resource that would address the needs of young families in the area.

Our priority is to ensure that children successfully transition to kindergarten and to support parents in strengthening their parenting skills. School readiness statistics in the area are alarming: when they start school, 1 in 3 children are affected by developmental delays that compromise their academic success.

The Maison des familles is:

   * A non-profit organization.
   * A community organization for families.
   * A charity, as recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency.

The Maison des familles de Saint-Laurent is a community organization that offers a living environment and a place for parents and their children to grow affectively, socially, physically and intellectually.

The Maison des familles is an active member of the following organizations:

* Comité des organismes sociaux de Saint-Laurent (COSSL);
* Regroupement des organismes communautaires familles de Montréal (ROCFM);
* Comité Petite enfance de Saint-Laurent;
* Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Saint-Laurent – Mount Royal.

The Maison des familles de Saint-Laurent is a living environment, a place to feel welcome et to belong for Saint-Laurent families. Deeply rooted in the community, it tends to be an agent for change and fosters partnerships to enhance the quality of the social fabric.

Certain areas in the Saint-Laurent borough are highly underprivileged. A high proportion of children under the age of 5 are living below the poverty line, and results regarding child vulnerability in the area are alarming. These facts bring to light how acutely families and young children need support and how important it is for them to be able to access quality medical, community and social services.

In this context, the fact that there was no organization dedicated entirely to the well-being of children and families —on a territory with one of the highest population growth rates in Quebec— was seen as an unacceptable gap that urgently needed to be filled.

Since the early 2000s, the idea of creating a family resource for Saint-Laurent has been an issue prioritized by local early childhood coordination through the Comité des organismes sociaux de Saint-Laurent (COSSL).

When the needs of families with children aged 0 to 5 were profiled in Saint-Laurent in 2007, the importance of creating such a resource in the area was identified by the families themselves.

In 2008, following news that a new installation of the Centre de Petite Enfance (CPE) Tchou-Tchou Daycare and a social pediatrics centre would be built, the Comité Petite Enfance seized the opportunity to bring its project to fruition by coupling the construction of the Maison des familles de Saint-Laurent with that of the CPE, therefore creating a Maison de l’enfance.
